Consulting on Ophthalmic Research

At VO-CRO, we are uniquely positioned because of our alignment with an academic medical center. We have access to facilities with high-end equipment that allow us to complete the highest-quality research and analysis in pre-clinical ophthalmic diseases. Our team of experts have decades of experience which enables us to accommodate clients with more than just data. Our senior staff can consult on:

Assessment of the current ocular drug development landscape

Current experimental standards for ocular drug development

Target identification

Target validation strategies

Experimental model selection

Experimental design

IND portfolio development

Mechanism of action determination

PK strategies

Formulation strategies

Toxicity determination strategies

Ophthalmic Research Models

Our organization is dedicated to offering advanced ocular models such as:

In Vitro

We retrieve high-quality data from isolating and culturing primary cells from mouse, rat, and human. We have years of experience developing methods that allow us to transfect each cell type. Types include:

  • Choroidal Endothelial Cells
  • Retinal Microvascular Endothelial Cells
  • Pericytes
  • Müller Glia
  • Retinal Pigmented Epithelium
  • Astrocytes
  • Microglia
  • Neurons

Ex Vivo

We isolate ocular tissues, including retina and choroid, from a variety of animal species and models for use in assays studying tissue properties and behaviors. Readouts include:

  • Angiogenesis
  • Inflammatory mediator expression and creation
  • Neuroprotection and neuronal apoptosis
  • Apoptosis

In Vivo

Our animal research is supported by a team of 75 full-time employees from the Division of Animal Care (DAC). The DAC provides veterinary care and husbandry services for over twenty species of vertebrate animals. Models include:

  • Oxygen-Induced Retinopathy
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Laser-Induced Choroidal Neovascularization
  • Retinal Degeneration
  • Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury
  • Retinal Vein Occlusion

Ocular Model Training

VO-CRO staff members are poised to train your personnel in cell- and animal-based study techniques to facilitate your discovery and drug development efforts. We have extensive expertise with cell-based models of growth factor and cytokine induction by disease-relevant stimuli and of induced cell behaviors relevant to ocular disease. We also have long-standing experience with animal models of ocular angiogenesis, vascular regression, vascular inflammation, and neurodegeneration.
